How to Determine the Best Size Travel Trailer for Your Family

Once you have decided how much you want to spend and how heavy of a travel trailer you can safely towed, you may still be wondering what size length you should get for your family’s needs.  Today, travel trailers come in a wide variety of lengths starting at around 14 feet all the way up to a few models that are as long as 36 feet.  Obviously tow weight determines the length you buy as longer is heavier, but there are choices within your tow weight, especially if you choose a smartly engineered, light-weight model.  

To get the right travel trailer that meets all of your requirements, you will want to look closely at the different floor plans that are offered.  This is probably one of your more important decisions and may be the determining factor on how satisfied you ultimately are with your new purchase. 

In hard wall trailers, layouts differ in the configuration of sleeping arrangements and how many people the model can comfortably sleep.  Be sure to check out the size of the sleeping areas especially those spaces like dining benches or sofas that turn into beds to ensure that a real person will happily fit. 

 

And while you are at it, make sure you can actually fit in the shower, that closets are big enough to hold your clothes, and that there are adequate cabinets for kitchen equipment.  Check out the windows.  Are there enough of them and do you like the placement?

Other pertinent questions include how far you generally plan to travel with your trailer and what will be the average duration of your trips.   What type of terrain will you be taking it to and will it be used in colder weather?  Is it going to be used regularly or just a couple of times a year?  Additionally before you buy, think about where you will store it when not in use.  Taking the time to answer all these questions will help you to make the right decision on what to buy.
