Tips for Buying a Used Truck

Buying a used truck is a great way to save money but you want to be sure to get one that fits your needs.  Don’t let yourself get talked into buying a truck that is bigger or more powerful than you require as it will cost you more to operate over the course of ownership.  Before you start shopping, try and get an idea of just what type of truck you need and how much money you want to spend.

Most trucks are two-seaters and are designed with a longer bed than those with larger cabs. If you will be just driving yourself and perhaps one other person, buy a two-seater and give yourself the extra cargo space.  If your truck is mainly for every day commuting and will not be used as a tow vehicle, a 4-cylinder engine is all you need and offers better gas mileage.  For towing boats or heavy-weight trailers, you will probably need a V6 or V8 engine.
Depending on where you live and the type of driving you will do, you may want to look for a 4x4 truck rather than a two-wheel drive to provide better traction.  It will perform better in snowy conditions and can be used for off-road driving.  A two-wheel drive works just fine if you plan to do neither.

If you think you require one, look for a used truck that already has a camper shell.  It is going to be necessary if you want to haul stuff that needs to be protected from theft and weather.  You may be able to find a used camper shell for your truck, but before you buy, make sure it is in good working condition and was built to fit your truck.
